Who We Serve

UGA Student Veterans Resource Center

UGA Student Veterans Resource Center

Since 2014, the RVA has supported the Student Veterans Resource Center at the University of Georgia.(UGA SVRC) After returning from Iraq/Afghanistan, Veterans faced unique issues compared to the standard college admissions. The Veterans are older, have been away from academic pursuits, are often married with families, and often without financial resources that younger students can rely upon. The endowment scholarship, called Reynolds Veterans Scholarship, was established in 2016 and this generates 4-scholarships per year. During these biannual presentations, the RVA hosts the Awards receptions and personally presents the scholarships to the recipients.

This spring, the UGA Honor Cord Awards honored Cameron Gaulker (Master in Business Administration) and Anna Rancovi (International Affairs) with $1,000 RVA scholarships each. The director of the SVRC, Dr. Jon Segars, is given a discretionary fund each year to help students with urgent financial need. The RVA also provides financial grants for the Student President of the SVRC. Other support includes breakfasts for the “Quick Look” group for Corporate recruiters and Student Work Study programs.

Eisenhower Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic

Eisenhower Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic

The Functional Recovery Program is an innovative multidisciplinary approach to treatment of the typical symptoms being experienced by active-duty Soldiers who have sustained a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI).  Symptoms may include headache, memory loss, insomnia, mood issues, and pain.  Service Members are trained in understanding the mechanisms and consequences of concussion and resultant headaches.  Sleep hygiene techniques and the application of techniques learned in cognitive therapy to assist and improve memory are reviewed.  Mind-Body approaches to recovery including breathing techniques, stretching exercises, physical exercise, meditation, journaling, and self-expression are taught.  Our chaplain discusses the possibility of hope, guides to managing anger, and effectively recognizing and dealing with guilt/shame, grief/loss.  We also openly discuss sexuality issues that may have arisen as a result of their combat experiences and injuries as well as interpersonal/spousal relationship issues and skills.  Spouses, significant others, and at times parents are brought to the training to participate in order to better understand what the Soldier has gone through and be better equipped to support their recovery.  Our Substance Use Disorder program presents the topic of alcohol and drug abuse with respect to self-medication and the mixing of prescription medications with alcohol/drug use. Participants are also scheduled for daily physical exercise and recreational therapy which encourages them to explore new activities.

Pets Love Vets Free Pet Adoptions

Pets Love Vets

RVA teams up with the Lake Oconee Humane Society and the Rotary Club of Greene & Putnam Counties to support Pets Love Vets, a FREE pet adoption program for U.S. Military Veterans. This is a powerful project designed to increase the quality of life for all U.S. military veterans, including those who may be struggling with PTSD and/or other service related illness or injury. This program has had a profound impact on central Georgia’s veteran community. Pets Love Vets helps once-troubled veterans achieve a measure of peace and tranquility in their lives; the unconditional love and acceptance that a companion pet offers has instantaneous benefits for the veteran.
